    Zaki Nassif (Arabic: زكي ناصيف; 4 July 1918 – 10 March 2004) was a Lebanese music composer and singer. He was influential among the first generation of composers for the mass audience for music on radio in Lebanon in the 1940s and 1950s, and continued to be a force in Lebanese music until his death in 2004. His compositions continue to be performed in Lebanon today.

    Biography

    Born in Machghara, the largest town in the western Beqaa Valley in 1918 and was involved in music and country folk poetry (zagal, maannaa, 'ataba, mijana, abu el zuluf, etc.) at an early age.     Zaki Nassif is an outstanding character. He marked our childhood with his beautiful, klar and evocative songs that are now part of our life and nostalgia of good old days. Prestige hosted the tenor of the Lebanese folklore at its premises in Ain Saade. The years have left their marks on the man. His memory betrays him: “I do not remember anything about my childhood in Mashgharah, my hometown. It is precisely in this beautiful site,  adjacent to the Litani, which was in time a meandering stream, that I saw the day, on August 7th, 1916 .     Zaki Nassif was born on the 3rd of July 1916, and died March 11th, 2004. He studied music from 1936 to 1941 at the AUB Institute of Music (1929-1949). Zaki Nassif is one of the most important and prolific composers in the history of Lebanon, having significantly contributed to a mid-20th-century cultural renaissance in the young nation. Important characteristics of his style include a novel use of harmony, unique combinations among text and music, instrumental colors and rhythmic patterns, and folk dance influence. He left the world a rich musical heritage, which was the result of a new and uniquely Lebanese school of composition.

    To preserve his legacy, the Zaki Nassif Program for Music was established at the American University of Beirut in December 2004. Housed in the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, the program is overseen by a director with support from an academic committee.
