    Henri Christophe (b. 6 October ; d. 8 October ), president of the State of Haiti (–) and king (–). In the inky darkness of a mountain night, an exhausted entourage of royalty and servants led by Queen Marie-Louise reached the outer gates of the fortress of Citadelle la Ferrière. Once inside the compound, two royal aides hurriedly looked for shovels and a place to dispose of their cargo, an unshrouded body in a hammock.     Henri Christophe was a military leader in the Haitian Revolution as well as president and later king of the young nation. Born into slavery in , Christophe was brought to French colonial Haiti, known as Saint Domingue, most likely from Kitts. There he worked a wide variety of posts including sailor, mason, bartender, and billiard marker. Like many slaves and free people of color in Saint Domingue, Christophe was familiar with military matters from a young age, having accompanied the French expedition to Savannah, Georgia in bygd his early twenties, Christophe was able to purchase his freedom and joined the growing class of free blacks.

    Henri Christophe[1] (French pronunciation:[ɑ̃ʁikʁistɔf]; 6 October – 8 October ) was a key leader in the Haitian Revolution and the only monarch of the Kingdom of Haiti.

    Born in the British Caribbean, Christophe was possibly of Senegambian descent.[2] Beginning with the slave uprising of , he rose to power in the ranks of the Haitian revolutionary military. The revolution succeeded in gaining independence from France in In he took part under Jean-Jacques Dessalines in the capture of Santo Domingo (now Dominican Republic), against French forces who acquired the colony from Spain in the Treaty of Basel.
