Very happy to see my photographs included in the special issue of @natgeo Pictures of the Year 2022. This year I traveled to Armenia where I met Parkev Kazarian, an Armenian taxidermist originally from Baku, Azerbaijan, who was my father's friend and protege. At some point in their lives they were inseparable and my father Rustam Effendi, a well known Azerbaijani entomologist, taught Parkev how to collect, preserve and breed butterflies. Parkev last saw my father in 1989 shortly before he left Baku, as the war unravelled between Armenia and Azerbaijan. He now lives alone in Gyumri in a small house filled with taxidermy of various birds, stacks of boxes with preserved butterflies and beetles. Meeting Parkev and stepping into his home was like entering a time capsule, the one when the two neighboring nations were still at peace, the one in the cosmopolitan city of Baku where I grew up where we shared the same jokes, same peculiar stories, same neurosis, same habits and superstiti
