    Good historical images but painfully sidetracked

    Ana Carolina's documentary is an interesting collage of audio and images from the newsreels era that follows one of the most controversial and also one of the most honored figures in Brazil history, president Getúlio Vargas (1882-1954). The film covers his two major political periods - which divides in between his power takeover (1930-1945) and the election period (1950-1954), which ended abruptly with his suicide on 24 August, 1954 after a scandal where a political rival was shot (but survived) and his bodyguard, a naval officer were killed by men allegedly under Vargas orders or coming from someone close to him - sadly, the film never touches this last important fact except for news clips.

    In February 2018, the Panorama Dokumenta at the 68th edition of the Berlinale, or the Berlin International Film Festival, showcased 20 features.     Getúlio is a 2014 Brazilian biographicaldrama film directed by João Jardim and written by George Moura, starring Tony Ramos as Brazilian presidentGetúlio Vargas, based on the final moments of the crisis that led to the death of the then president, during the 19 days before the August 24, 1954.[3]

    The film was released in Brazil on May 1, 2014, coinciding with the Workers' Day official holiday – in reference to the labor policies implemented by Getúlio.[4]

    The plot begins in August 1954, after the attempted murder of Carlos Lacerda (Alexandre Borges), owner of the opposition newspaper, then, president Getúlio has to confront with the increasing instability of his government, in addition to the charges of ordering the murder of his political enemy.[5]
