Sajid Wajid Shaikh is a Mumbai based multimedia artist. Following a set of driving principles influenced by an organic intuition, his works take on different forms in terms of themes and mediums. Thinking about his drawing as one of the core components of his practice, he sees the act as cathartic and sensorial responses to his surroundings. The resulting works take on abstract, distorted, sometimes grotesque forms. These raw and unbridled investigations draw inspiration from German abstract expressionism that encourage spontaneity and imagination. Pursuing the line-drawing practice has led Shaikh to experiment with ‘sketchbooks,’ where each sketchbook becomes a sculptural entity capable of acting as a whole, in addition to being a sum of its parts. Taking inspiration from the likes of Sol Lewitt and Duchamp, the artist has refocused his primary tool of hand to mind and started to explore the complexities and practical (im)possibilities of an idea.
