    Vicky Neale was an exceptional university teacher and had the ability to bring many people to mathematics through her outreach work. She tragically died from cancer aged 39.

    Biography

    Vicky Neale was born in Worcester but the family moved to a little by just outside Winchester when she was five years old. Her mother was a secondary school teacher who taught various subjects including mathematics. Her father had studied electronic engineering so also had a background in mathematics. As she was growing up, mathematics would be discussed in the home, not as a subject in its own right, but rather as something which was a part of everyday life.

    Jaime Escalante's full name was Jaime Alfonso Escalante Gutiérrez but he was known as Jaime Escalante. He was the son of Zenobio Escalante Rodríguez and Sara Gutiérrez Valle, both of whom were teachers at elementary schools in the town of Achacachi. They had five children, with Jaime the second eldest of them.     William Macdonald SmithGCOB (25 June 1939 – 21 August 2024) was a South African science and mathematics teacher who was best known for his maths and science lessons on television.[1] Born in Makhanda (Grahamstown), he is the son of the ichthyologist Margaret Mary Smith and Professor J. L. B. Smith, the renowned chemist and ichthyologist who identified the coelacanth.

    William Smith was born on 25 June 1939.[2] He attended St. Andrew's Prep before matriculating at Union High School in Graaff-Reinet. Smith then went on to study at Rhodes University, where he obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in physics and chemistry, followed by an honours degree (cum laude) in chemistry at the same institution. Following that, he obtained a master's degree from the University of Natal (Pietermaritzburgcampus) in only seven months.[2]
