    Rudolfo Anaya

    American author (1937–2020)

    Rudolfo Anaya (October 30, 1937 – June 28, 2020) was an American author. Noted for his 1972 novel Bless Me, Ultima, Anaya was considered one of the founders of the canon of contemporary Chicano and New Mexican literature.[1][2] The themes and cultural references of the novel, which were uncommon at the time of its publication, had a lasting impression on fellow Latino writers. It was subsequently adapted into a film and an opera.

    Rudolfo Anaya was raised in Santa Rosa, New Mexico. His father, Martín Anaya, was a vaquero from a family of cattle workers and sheepherders. His mother, Rafaelita (Mares), was from a family composed of farmers from Puerto De Luna in the Pecos Valley of New Mexico.[3] Anaya grew up with two half-brothers, from his mother's previous marriage, and four sisters. Su novela Bless Me, Ultima (1972) se considera una de las fundantes del canon contemporáneo de la literatura chicana.[2]​

    Nació en la villa rural de Pastura (Nuevo México), siendo hijo de Martín y Rafaelita Anaya.[2]​ Su padre provenía de una familia de ganaderos, mientras que los familiares de su madre eran granjeros.[3]​ Anaya fue el quinto de los siete hijos de la pareja. También tuvo otros tres hermanos de los matrimonios previos de sus padres.[3]​ Siendo todavía un niño, se mudaron a Santa Rosa.[2]​ En 1952, se mudaron a Albuquerque, donde vivieron en el barrio de Barelas.[3]​ En el hogar de la familia se hablaba español, por lo que Anaya no aprendió inglés hasta que empezó sus estudios.[4]​
