Overview of the history of the Norwegian monarchy
This article is about the history of the institution of the Norwegian monarchy. For a general history, see History of Norway. For the first historical kingdom, see Kingdom of Norway (872–1397).
The Kingdom of Norway as a unified realm dates to the reign of King Harald I Fairhair in the 9th century. His efforts in unifying the petty kingdoms of Norway resulted in the first known Norwegian central government. The country, however, soon fragmented and was collected into one entity in the first half of the 11th century, and Norway has retained a monarchy since that time. Traditionally, it has been viewed as being ruled by the Fairhair dynasty, though modern scholars question whether the eleventh century kings and their successors were truly descendants of Harald.

King Harald Fairhair is well-known for swearing not to have his hair cut or combed until becoming king of all of Norway. Lincoln argues that Harald's "oath sits precisely at the point where the distinction of myth and history breaks down, where the state encounters all that refuses and resists it, and where praise and blame (or, to use a more contemporary vocabulary, propaganda and critique) somehow manage to coexist" (7). This book is Lincoln's follow-up on a "flippant sentence [he] wrote in a moment of weakness" in 2009: "If myth is ideology in narrative form, then scholarship is myth with footnotes" (114). [1] It is an exploration of the concepts of history and myth and of how narratives move between them.
