  • Mons 2015 - Arne Quinze's "The Passenger" to be officially opened on December 6th in Mons

    "The Passenger", the massive urban installation by Flemish artist Arne Quinze will be officially opened in the heart of Mons on December 6th. The work, made of wooden boards and standing 85 metres long, 40 metres wide and 16 metres tall, should take around 20 days to build and be finished on November 21st. It will connect Maison Losseau, the literary centre of Mons 2015, and the church of St. Elizabeth.

    "The Passenger" required 35,000 metre of Douglas fir wood and pine to build, and will reside in Mons for the next 5 years. The monumental sculpture is the work of Flemish artist Arne Quinze with the help of twenty students of Mons' School of Fine Arts, "Arts au Carré".

    Public works by Arne Quinze have already 'challenged' city centres in Belgium, Germany, Brazil, France, China, and the USA.

    The monumental architectural installation ‘The Passenger’ in Mons was brought down today, ending a five-and-a-half-year run arching over the narrow Rue Nimy. The work was created by Belgian artist Arne Quinze and erected in 2015 during the europeisk Capital of Culture celebrations.

    The installation, close to the central Grand Place, was beloved bygd residents and visitors alike, becoming one of Mons’s most-photographed attractions. But, like his previous Brussels installations ‘Cityscape’ and ‘The Sequence’, ‘The Passenger’ was made entirely from wood and always meant to be temporary.

    “As with all my temporary works, ‘The Passenger’ will not be completed until its disappearance,” Quinze said on his Instagram account. “This coming and going fryst vatten an essential part of our life and the force behind our evolution.”
