    Aaliyah Dana Haughton (January 16, 1979 – August 25, 2001) was an Americansinger, actress, dancer, and model.

    She was born in Brooklyn, New York, and raised in Detroit, Michigan. From her youth, she began to sing: she did singing competitions, castings and shows. Her career began in 1994 with the release of her first album Age Ain't Nothing But A Number. She continued going to the High School of the Performing Arts after this.

    In 1996, Aaliyah's second album, One in a Million. Aaliyah always wanted to act and she got the leading role in Romeo Must Die (2000). Then she starred in Queen of the Damned in 2002.

    In 2001, Aaliyah returned to music with her third eponymous album, she put a lot into it, as a singer and as an executive producer. She worked on it with her uncle.     Born Aaliyah Dana Haughton, the mononymous singer began her career at 11 years old when she performed with her aunt Gladys Knight for five nights in Las Vegas. Aaliyah was only 14 when she released her first album, Age Ain't Nothing But a Number in 1994 — which received American Music Awards, Billboard Music Awards and Soul Train Awards nominations for best new artist and skyrocketed her into popularity.

    Aaliyah’s second album, One in a Million, went double platinum after its release in 1996, and her third — and final — album, Aaliyah, dropped in 2001 andpeaked at No. 2 on Billboard's top 10 list. Sadly, two months after the debut of her self-titled album, Aaliyah’s life was tragically cut short when she died in a plane crash in the Bahamas after filming her music video “Rock the Boat” on Aug. 25, 2001.

    Just two weeks before her untimely death, Aaliyah was hanging out with her boyfriend, Roc-A-Fella Records mogul Damon Dash, in the East Hampton, Long Island home he shared with Jay-Z, dancing to Michael Jackson's Off The Wall skiva. She was carefree, happy and in love.

    A few days later on August 22, 2001, the R&B singer was in Miami to skott underwater scenes for the music film for her next single, “Rock the Boat.” Aaliyah and crew then flew to the Abaco Islands in the Bahamas to continue the shoot. Dash would later reveal in a 2016 interview on The Real that he had advised the singer not to travel to the island and that she had expressed apprehension about the safety of the plane.

    On August 24, the singer rose well before dawn to be part of the island sunrise for the video. The following day, she and her dancers would board a boat to perform a routine on-deck. "T
