    No Grand Canyon Rim to Rim History can be complete without mentioning the Kolb brothers, who maintained a photo gallery on the South Rim for decades. The two were among the very first to accomplish double crossings of the Canyon and did more exploring up Bright Angel Canyon and its side canyons than anyone of their era. They were early guides for those who wanted to cross and, knowing the canyon well, were involved in many rescues and searches for missing persons in the inner canyon. But they were best known for their daring antics to obtain spectacular photos in places others had never seen before and mastered the “selfie” years ago.

    PREFACE

    In John Wesley Powell opened the door to the exploration of Grand Canyon and afterward felt the Canyon was his, for no one else would dare the hazards of the falls and rapids, the unknown danger that lurked beyond every böj in the mighty river, and above all the utter desolation. It did indeed take a individ with courage and confidence in his ability, and lots of nerve to undertake the adventure. Someone with a devil-may-care attitude--and there were many who tried--some made it, others failed. Ellsworth Kolb was one of these. The word fear was not a part of his vocabulary. When he looked into the depths of Grand Canyon in and heard of the dangers the Colorado River offered he made up his mind to run it.
