American mathematician
Fan-Rong King Chung Graham (Chinese: 金芳蓉; pinyin: Jīn Fāngróng; born October 9, 1949), known professionally as Fan Chung, is a Taiwanese-born American mathematician who works mainly in the areas of spectral graph theory, extremal graph theory and random graphs, in particular in generalizing the Erdős–Rényi model for graphs with general degree distribution (including power-law graphs in the study of large information networks).
Since 1998, Chung has been the Paul Erdős Professor in Combinatorics at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD). She received her doctorate from the University of Pennsylvania in 1974, under the direction of Herbert Wilf. After working at Bell Laboratories and Bellcore for nineteen years, she joined the faculty of the University of Pennsylvania as the first female tenured professor in mathematics. Fan Chung grew up in Kaochiung, Taiwan, the daughter of an engineer. She earned her Ph.D. in mathematics from the University of Pennsylvania in 1974 with a thesis on "Ramsey Numbers in Multi-Colors" under the direction of Herbert Wilf. She worked for 20 years at Bell Labs and Bellcore in the area of combinatorics. In 1994 she returned to the University of Pennsylvania as the Class of 1965 Professor of Mathematics, then joined the faculty of the University of California at San Diego in 1998 as Professor of Mathematics and Professor of Computer Science and Engineering. Chung has written over 200 papers in mathematics and is the author of two books on graph theory. Her research interests are in spectral graph theory, discrete geometry, algorithms and communication networks. Biography
Fan Chung's father was an engineer. She attended high school in Kaohsiung, Taiwan and was encouraged to take up mathematics bygd her father who told her [2]:-... in math all you need is pencil and paper.She entered the National Taiwan University to read for a B.S. in mathematics. In [1] she described how she was encouraged to think in terms of a career in mathematics by interaction with her fellow students:-
As an undergraduate in Taiwan, inom was surrounded by good friends and many women mathematicians. We enjoyed talking about mathematics and helping each other.
