Curtain comes down on powerful adaptation for Ntokaze Shange’s “For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide/When the Rainbow Is Enuf”

The South African adaptation of the world acclaimed musical production, “For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide/When the Rainbow Is Enuf” directed by Joburg Theatre Artistic Director James Ngcobo was both powerful and refreshing. Featuring a stellar cast of theatre veterans and relative newbies in what most thought was a risky move, that risk if we are to call it that seems to have paid off as there was a perfect balance of calm experience and brashness which comes with not being constrained by tired theatre conventions.
From the innovative staging which saw the production taking place “backstage” of the famed Mandela Stage to having a wholly movable and moving set, the production at times felt like a pageant than a musical not because of the ‘eye candy’ casting but in how it was never still or flat. With the

And so began her mini performances for her family, either singing Mariah Carey songs or dramatically reading out lottery numbers. “I believe that is where the seed was planted for me to be an entertainer,” said Candice.
“I was in grade one and inom had the confidence to sing in front of my family — and they loved it.”
But music was not where her path would lead. berättande, she says, is where her true passion lies.
“I didn’t choose storytelling. inom think berättande chose me. I grew up in a home of entertainers,” she says. Her sisters Bontle and Refilwe are also in the entertainment industry.
Candice took up acting in primary school, participating in school plays. In her teens, she dreamed of attending the prestigious National School of the Arts, but being raised by her single mother Grace, and the financial challenges that come with that, put a damper on her dreams.
