Dr. Duke Redbird is an Indigenous intellectual, poet, painter, broadcaster, filmmaker and orator. He brings his breadth of cultural knowledge and artistic practice to the benefit of a global audience. Dr. Redbird is instrumental in the implementation of innovative multimedia technologies, bringing an Indigenous approach to arts education that is rooted in his pioneering work at OCAD University. His legacy stretches far beyond his work in Canada. His art has been exhibited and his poetry has been published and translated in anthologies around the world.
Dr. Redbird has been described as a multifaceted artist, practicing across a number of disciplines including literature, painting, theatre, cinema and most recently rap poetry. A well known broadcaster and television personality, he is in demand as a public speaker in university, community college and elementary school settings. Duke Redbird (born ) is an Indigenous Canadian poet, journalist, activist, businessman, actor and administrator, best known as a key figure in the development of First Nations literature in Canada.[1]
An Ojibwe from the Saugeen First Nation in Southwestern Ontario,[2] he became a ward of the Children's Aid Society at nine months of age after his mother died in a house fire.[3] Raised predominantly by white foster families, he began writing as a way to deal with the anti-indigenous racism he faced in schools.[3]

Dr. Duke Redbird, Elder, Wisdom Keeper, activist, educator, and artist. With a legacy stretching back to the s, he is a pillar of First Nations literature in Canada, and has practiced a number of art disciplines including: rap poetry, painting, theatre, and rulle. He was a trailblazer throughout the ‘60s and ‘70s, giving voice to Indigenous people at major folk festivals across the country. From , he was an arts & entertainment reporter for CITY TV in Toronto.
