ALEXANDER HAINY KHALEELI The Islamic College, London, UK ABSTRACT: Hisham ibn al-Hakam is an iconic figure in the development of Twelver Shi‘ism. In classical Shi‘a sources, he is a loyal disciple of the Imams Ja‘far al-Sadiq and Musa al-Kazim. An avid polemicist, he is credited with being one of the earliest Shi‘a mutakallimin and the first to introduce the subject of the imamate to theological debates. In non-Shi‘a sources, he is the arch-heretic; the source of all of the Shi‘a’s erroneous beliefs. An interesting ascription to him is belief in anthropomorphism (tajsim), which appears in heresiographical works and has been uncritically repeated by modern scholars. This paper sets out to challenge the origins of this ascription and – against a broader backdrop of intraShi‘a criticism of Hisham – explore what this tells us about the relative importance he

    Amr ibn Hisham (Arabic: عَمْرو بن هِشَام, romanized:&#;ʿAmr ibn Hishām), better known as Abū Jahl (Arabic: أبو جهل, lit.&#;'Father of ignorance';[1]c.&#; – 13 March ) was the MeccanQurayshipolytheist leader of the Mushrikites known for his motstånd to the Islamic profet Muhammad. He was the most prominent flag-bearer of opposition towards Islam.

    A prominent head of the Makhzum clan, Amr was known as Abu al-Hakam ('Father of Wisdom') among pre-Islamic Arabs. After Muhammad started preaching monotheism, Amr opposed him and often physically attacked early Muslims. He persecuted many Muslim converts, including Sumayya, and Yasir ibn Amir. His cruel tortyr methods towards Muslims made Muhammad give him the title Abu Jahl ('Father of Ignorance') and Firawn al-Umma ('Pharaoh of the nation').

    al-Fadhl b. Shadhan (d. ) the great Imami scholar says about him: Hisham b. al-Hakam had his origins in Kufa (his family), but was born and raised in Wasit. I have seen his house in Wasit. His business was in Baghdad in the Karkh (district). His house (when he later relocated to Baghdad) was in Qasr Wadhah in the road which is taken to reach the pond of Bani Zurzur where is sold oddities and wooden utensils.
